Striped Bass

from $3,950.00

The striped bass, or Morone Saxatilis, is one of the few anadromous fish outside of the Onchorhychus genus of the Salmonidae family (pacific salmon). Much like these anadromous salmon, stripers run up rivers to spawn in the water they were born in. Unlike salmon however, they do not die after spawning. They return to the salt and make many migrations over their 30 year lifespan. Such a long life and access to the abundant prey in the ocean, these fish are known to grow enormously. Some specimens have been measured at close to 5 feet long and 250 pounds. As a prized game fish, many conservation efforts have been enacted to help these predators recover from over harvesting. In colonial times, the striped bass runs were said to be legendary. So many would run at once and of such size it was said that one could walk from bank to bank on their backs. The colors come from metal oxides dissolved into the glass.
