The Large Mouth Bass, or Micropterus nigricans, is the largest species of the black bass. Known for their popularity as a sport fish. They fight vigorously sometimes even breaching the surface to shake the hook. While most popular with spin fisherman, they can be fished with fly equipment. One of our favorite memories is fishing for them from a sinking paddleboat on Indigo’s grandfather’s pond in northwestern Iowa, stripping a frog fly across the surface and clearing the weeds from it every cast. We only got one successful hook-set the entire trip by a largemouth that dragged us and the boat across the pond before snagging the line on a sunken tree. Because they are so popular, they have been introduced to many bodies of water where they are not native and have become invasive species, especially in bodies of water with less weed cover. Caution and thought should be put into new introductions.
